Haringey adopts North London Waste Plan
A new plan to ensure there is enough land for sustainable waste management has been adopted by Haringey Council.
The North London Waste Plan (NLWP), developed by the Council in partnership with six other North London boroughs, provides a planning framework for waste management in North London until 2036. It identifies priority areas for new facilities and sets out policies for determining planning applications for new waste uses as the population evolves.
Adoption of the NLWP will enable waste generated in North London to be managed and treated as sustainably as possible as well as encourage recycling. A key component of the plan is to direct waste uses to the appropriate sites and ensure that there are suitable processes in place to protect the environment. In addition to this, it aims to safeguard the amenity of local residents whilst ensuring the needs of Haringey are met.
The plan has been co-produced by the seven North London Boroughs: Haringey, Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest and shaped by the community. Through engagement with residents and working with an independent planning inspector, various modifications have been made to the Plan to address various concerns, including environmental protection.
Cllr Dana Carlin, Cabinet Member for House Services, Private Renters and Planning, said: “Whilst we have a statutory duty to produce a Waste Local Plan, at Haringey Council, we are determined to look beyond ‘just a plan’. The adoption of the North London Waste Plan will help the Council ensure waste is managed in sustainable locations and encourage recycling.
“An adopted Plan will also mean the Council has greater control and influence over any planning applications that may come forward, and will enable the policies, which have been shaped with community input, to come into force.”
