Leader's statement - energy price cap
Responding to the Chancellor’s comments about the cap on household energy bills being cut, Leader of Haringey Council, Cllr Peray Ahmet, has issued a statement on the impact this will have on residents across Haringey.
“I’m bitterly disappointed that the Government has gone back on its word and cut the cap on all household energy bills from two years to six months.
“The cost-of-living crisis is acute with our residents who are already finding it incredibly difficult to cope with big increases in food, rent, transport and energy prices.
“The government’s failure to provide long-term support where it is desperately needed means our residents are facing an uncertain future with the prospect of soaring energy bills next year. We will be seeking assurances from the government that post-April support will reach those hardest hit by the cost of living crisis.
“Despite the Chancellor’s announcement today, we will continue to do all we can for residents who are seeking extra financial support and other help from the council.
“We launched our Here to Help campaign in 2020 and it continues to be an invaluable resource for many residents today. It includes a dedicated Here to Help webpage, an online benefits calculator, and a Financial Support Helpline, as well as grants to help with food, heating and family costs including grants for school uniforms. All the information is on our Here to Help webpage
“We also launched our Haringey Warm Welcome spaces last week that will help residents stay warm and get access to food and drink over the winter months.
“But we know this is not going to be enough and the council cannot act alone. We are all going to have to work together in this crisis, like we did during the pandemic."
