Thousands across Haringey set to receive full fibre broadband
A new multi-million-pound investment which aims to provide full fibre high-speed broadband to residents and businesses across the borough is under way as the council sets to boost digital infrastructure in Haringey.
Haringey Council has joined forces with internet service providers Community Fibre, 4 Fibre and Hyperoptic to deliver fast, low-cost internet access to both council-owned and private homes across the borough. Additional broadband suppliers are in the process of coming on board with the new initiative soon.
Using fibre-optic cables instead of telephone cables will provide residents with ultrafast and ultra-reliable Internet speeds. The super-fast connectivity will also be rolled out to local businesses.
Working closely with landlords and housing associations across the borough, the council aims to provide local people with the best connectivity with the highest broadband speeds in London whilst also offering the best value for money.
The new initiative also offers free 1gigabit Wi-Fi connection in communal areas within local community hubs and council-owned community buildings. With plans to run digital inclusion training schemes, various opportunities will also arise for local residents – this includes, jobs, apprentices, work experience as well as training.
Installation of the new initiative will begin later this year and is expected to be completed within three years. Once complete, residents across the borough – including 21,000 social housing properties – will be offered various packages. This will be dependent on the broadband provider and will include options to add telephone and TV to complete the package.
Cllr Adam Jogee, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Jobs and Community Cohesion, said: “Haringey is full of opportunities, and we hope to offer these to as many people as possible with this new initiative. That’s why we believe that by investing in our borough, we are investing in our people.
“With new technologies constantly emerging and more information becoming widely available, having a reliable internet connection is key to our day to day lives. Whether this is to seek new job opportunities, support children with their schoolwork or book a doctor’s appointment, the internet offers residents more accessibility and access to a wider platform.
“We hope to ensure more jobs become readily available for local people from White Hart Lane to Stroud Green and from Hornsey to Tottenham Hale and beyond. By strengthening and supporting our local economy, we can generate even more opportunities for those who live, learn and work in our community - now and into the future.”
