The Opportunity Investment Fund (OIF) is a £3.65m programme to enable investment in workspace and employment projects in Tottenham. The fund is jointly provided by Haringey Council and the GLA.
Through this programme we are seeking projects that help existing SMEs grow and bring new operators into the local economy who can drive and curate entrepreneurship, business growth and diversify the local economy.
Tottenham is an attractive and affordable proposition for both operators and tenants being priced out of workspace locations in Hackney and the City. The urban character and property stock is compatible with space requirements and aspirations that many creative operators are looking for.
To secure economic outcomes for local residents and businesses, public sector investment can help start the momentum; whether that is with time, assets or capital. The Opportunity Investment Fund seeks to respond to this need.
We are interested in businesses that will create high quality employment with good opportunities for career progression. We want the Opportunity Investment Fund to show off 'Tottenham’s finest', celebrating businesses and giving them the opportunity to showcase their products and services.
Mill Co. Project
The Mill Co. Project (TMCP), a social enterprise provider of workspace, requested a loan from the Opportunity Investment Fund to support capital investment in bringing an additional 15,000 ft² of new affordable workspace to the market, across several sites in the South Tottenham industrial area. The funding request asked for 30% of the loan to be retained (as a subordinated debt) in TMCP to develop community projects linked to the tenant SMEs. Supporting the project will unlock the following outputs:
- 15,000 ft² workspace created
- 2 vacant commercial units brought back into use
- 3 FTE jobs created for Haringey residents
- A minimum of 12 business units/studios
Arts organisation Create, approached the council with a proposal to open a neighbourhood restaurant operating as a social enterprise delivering regeneration and public health outcomes in Tottenham. Chicken Town offers a tasty alternative to the growing number of chicken shops on our high streets selling cheap, poor quality and unhealthy food.
Chicken Town serves the whole community from £2 Junior Specials and healthy family meal deals to an evening destination restaurant and bar serving craft beers and high-quality fast casual food, which contains far less fat and calories than traditional high street fried chicken.
The restaurant employs 15 members of staff at any one time and over the first three years of operation is expected to create over 40 new jobs for the area.
Create is working with Haringey Council and local partners including the Spurs Foundation, to recruit and train local young people to work in the restaurant, providing good working conditions, mentoring, career pathways and fair pay.
