Education Welfare Service (EWS)

The Education Welfare Service supports good school attendance and high standards of pupil welfare. We work with

  • schools
  • pupils
  • and families

We can give advice on matters relating to school attendance, child protection and bullying. We will also work with pupils who are finding it difficult to attend school and help them to attend school regularly.

The EWS fulfils the council's statutory duty to ensure that all children attend school regularly.

Where children do not attend school regularly, and there is no good reason for such absence, the EWS will use the full range of statutory powers, including court action and the issuing of fixed penalty notices, to ensure that this happens.
