Bus shelters

The responsibility for bus shelters in the borough lies with Transport for London and generally shelters are provided at all stops unless there are overriding technical difficulties.

Who provides and maintains bus shelters?

Bus shelters are provided at most bus stops by TFL. These will either be maintained by TFL themselves, or by ADSHEL an advertising partner of TFL, who supply and maintain shelters in return for the ability to advertise on them.

To report any problems regarding the maintenance of bus shelters, please contact ADSHEL (external link).

Can I request a bus shelter?

All requests for new shelters should be made to TFL, who will then assess the number of passengers using the bus stop, and decide whether or not a shelter is justified. Shelters can only be provided if the footway is wide enough, and if the shelter does not obstruct visibility for drivers emerging from nearby side roads.

Bus Service Improvements

Transport for London, is responsible for planning and funding bus services in the borough. Haringey Council has a role in seeking bus service improvements and additional bus services.

The road network needs to move people and goods efficiently to ensure the social and economic well-being of our communities. Buses have a vital role to play in this as they can make excellent use of limited road space, carrying many more passengers than a private car for a given amount of road space.

London Bus Priority Network

The London Bus Priority Network (LBPN) covers all borough roads that carry buses. The network consists of measures that assist bus movement by improving journey speeds and reliability. The LBPN partnership is well established and is recognised by Transport for London and boroughs alike.

Bus Stop Accessibility

The council works in partnership with Transport for London to improve accessibility to bus services in the borough by implementing bus stop clearways at every bus stop, providing adequate height kerbs and improving passengers waiting area.

Wheelchair Priority on Buses

Buggy users and other passengers may use the wheelchair space if it is not in use. However if a wheelchair user wants to board the bus, other passengers and buggy users will be asked to vacate the space or fold their buggies.

The priority wheelchair space is the only place in the bus in which wheelchair users can travel safely.
