Children’s Services and Public Health win prestigious awards

Haringey has scooped two prizes at the prestigious MJ Achievement Awards 2025 for its pioneering approach to delivering services.
MJ Awards 2025 Inequality in Health

The council fought off stiff competition to be named winners of Innovation in Children’s and Adult’s Services and Innovation in Reducing Health Inequalities.

The coveted awards, organised annually by the Municipal Journal publication, celebrate best practice in local public services and acknowledge the dedication of those supporting their communities.

In the Innovation in Children’s and Adult’s Services category, the Children’s Service alongside the Metropolitan Police Service won this award for a trailblazing initiative that looks at stop and search through a safeguarding lens and seeks to prevent harm to children as well as provide support to those who may be adversely impacted by the stop and search.

The Public Health Team triumphed in the Reducing Health Inequalities category for its groundbreaking work to tackle the harms caused by gambling, including being the first council in the country to join the Coalition to End Gambling Ads.

Cllr Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing said:

We are delighted to see the gambling harms programme be recognised in the Reducing Health Inequalities category.

We have seen the harm gambling can have on residents, and we are proud to work with partners, people with lived experience, and our healthcare system colleagues to create new ways to tackle the harms done.

We will continue to be innovators and leaders in this space and in tackling health inequalities in our borough.

Cllr Zena Brabazon, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families, said:

We’re incredibly proud to have this pioneering approach recognised on a national stage.

Using stop and search as a safeguarding tool which has been co-designed with young people highlights what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration.

We have already seen it shaping practice far beyond Haringey - that’s not only something to celebrate but also a fantastic achievement. Thank you to everyone who was involved.

At the same awards, the Highways and Transport teams where highly commended in the Best Transport Decarbonisation category for the council’s three low traffic neighbourhoods which have resulted in major traffic reductions inside the schemes, making it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel, scoot and shop locally.

Haringey’s quartet of nominations was completed by the multi-award-winning Housing Delivery Team who contested the Innovation in Housing category for its Woodridings Court scheme which will transform a derelict underground car park and magnet for anti-social behaviour into 33 high quality, energy efficient council homes.

The winners were announced on 20 June 2025.
