Leader & Multi-Faith Forum statement - Bondi Beach terror attack

Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet and the Haringey Multi-Faith Forum have issued a joint statement following the terror attack that took place on Bondi Beach in Australia.
Haringey homes aerial shot-9

We are all shocked and dismayed by the events that have taken place in Australia.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the horrific attack on Bondi Beach. This is a deeply disturbing incident, and our hearts are with the Jewish community across the world at this distressing time.

No one should have to live in fear simply because of their faith.

There is absolutely no place in our society for antisemitism or hatred of any kind, and in Haringey we stand in solidarity with our Jewish residents and all our diverse communities.

We know these are worrying times and people will be concerned but one of Haringey’s biggest strengths is how we stand together as one.

You only had to see the reaction from the community when we held a special Hannukah celebration in Crouch End on Sunday night to see how we can pull together and ensure that light shines over darkness.

We have been working closely with the police and community partners to provide reassurance and reinforce our shared commitment to keeping everyone safe.

The police are increasing their visibility within our Jewish communities, particularly at Hannukah events taking place over this period to ensure the safety of all attendees.

We encourage everyone to be vigilant at events and in public spaces and if you see anything suspicious, please trust your instincts and tell someone. In an emergency, please call 999.

There is no place for hate in Haringey.
