On a Mission to independent travel success

Three Haringey schools have been recognised for their strong commitment to active and sustainable travel through this year’s Mission Transition competition.

Cabinet Member Cllr Seema Chandwani presented the top prize—a new bicycle—to a former South Grove Primary School pupil, now at Gladesmore Community School, for completing the Year 6 challenge. Second and third prize winners from Belmont Primary and Highgate Primary will receive their awards shortly.

Now in its 11th year, Mission Transition helps Year 6 pupils gain confidence using buses and the Tube as they prepare for secondary school.

The programme, developed by Haringey Council’s Smarter Travel Team, won a national education award in 2023.

To encourage active travel to and from school, Haringey has introduced an impressive 36 School Streets covering 44 educational establishments, with more than 17,000 children now benefitting from zones spanning almost 14km during drop-off and pick-up times.
