Haringey mourns the passing of Prince Philip
Haringey Council would like to extend our deepest condolences regarding the death of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.
The Duke served in public life with distinction for seven decades, continuing to work well into his nineties. He was a symbol and mainstay of British life for so many years and his tireless dedication to his role and duties was both remarkable and inspirational. From 1952 to the time of his retirement, the Duke completed more than 22,000 solo public engagements.
Prince Philip touched many lives during his time and through the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme – open to those aged 14 to 24 – afforded opportunities to countless young people in Haringey, the UK and further afield to explore, learn and bond through working in teams. He was also dedicated to his charity work, lending his patronage to several charities and being a member of almost 800 different organisations.
The Duke was also known for his naval service and was a veteran of World War II. He was mentioned in dispatches for his actions in naval battle in 1941 and was later awarded the prestigious Greek War Cross.
Haringey’s Mayor, Cllr Adam Jogee, said:
The Mayoress and I are deeply saddened by the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip and I’m sure I speak on behalf of many people who live, learn and work here in Haringey who will want to extend their sympathies to Her Majesty the Queen and her family.
The Prince has represented this country and been a dedicated public servant for many decades. Over the years thousands of young people here in Haringey have benefited from the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, which gives children and young people the opportunity to learn new skills and experience adventures that they may otherwise not have had access to.
