Haringey will remember them
The Haringey community came together to pay their respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice at the Wood Green war memorial on Remembrance Sunday (12 November 2023) yesterday.
In a highly emotional and touching, all-faith ceremony, the Last Post preceded the two minutes’ silence at 11am before the various dignitaries in attendance laid wreaths at the base of the memorial.
There were also prayers and readings from Haringey community and faith groups as well as hymn singing prior to a rendition of the national anthem, God Save The King.
The service was attended by the Leader of Haringey Council, Cllr Peray Ahmet, the Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Lester Buxton, and the Deputy Lieutenant of Haringey, Captain Peter Baker RNR, RD.
Catherine West, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, Cllr Dawn Barnes (LIB) and former Spurs and England player and club ambassador/legend Ledley King also paid their respects by laying wreaths at this service of remembrance in Wood Green.
Cllr Ahmet later wrote on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter):
It was a real honour to join the Mayor of Haringey (Cllr Buxton), the Deputy Lieutenant Peter Baker and our faith/community representatives in Haringey today to lay a wreath and commemorate those who have lost their life due to war.
We stand together as one community in Haringey.
The Deputy Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Ajda Ovat, and Cabinet Members Cllr Seema Chandwani and Cllr Sarah Williams attended another moving service at the West Green war memorial yesterday afternoon.
Meanwhile, in Tottenham, there was a remembrance service at Holy Trinity Church and the cenotaph at Tottenham Town Hall, which was conducted by Father Bunmi. Local MP David Lammy joined Cllr Sheila Peacock, other local Cllrs and fellow dignitaries to mark this occasion.
