Statement on provisional funding settlement for councils

Responding to the publication of the provisional Local Government Financial Settlement for 2024/25, Council Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet and Cabinet Member for Finance and Local Investment, Cllr Dana Carlin, said:

On Monday the government announced its provisional funding settlement for local authorities. This is utterly inadequate as far as we are concerned.  The residents of Haringey have been let down once again.

This settlement fails to address the spiralling demand and cost pressures facing our council and others across the country providing vital frontline services for residents.

London boroughs alone were already dealing with a £600m funding shortfall this year and following this announcement councils across the capital are now predicting an additional deficit for next year of £500m.

It is simply unthinkable that once again this government is not providing the additional funding required for the crucial services our residents rely on.

Demand for services in Haringey, particularly adult social care, has dramatically increased and persistently high inflation is pushing up our costs. Government core funding is £143m a year less in real terms than it was in 2010. It is clear our budget is being put under massive pressure.

We have called on the government to act to save local services by providing sufficient funding for councils.  Despite the ongoing challenges, we will work hard to protect vital services for the most vulnerable and deliver for our communities.
