The Mayor's message on International Workers' Memorial Day 2021
On this, International Workers’ Memorial Day 2021, I join residents from across Haringey in commemorating all those workers who have lost their lives at work, or from work-related injury and diseases.
This year’s theme is ‘Health and Safety is a fundamental workers’ right.' Like so many, I have had family and loved ones working on the frontline in the fight against the Coronavirus. I know the fear and worry that families and friends felt over the last year as they watched their loved ones go out to work and wonder what would happen to them.
The last year has shown the importance of today more than ever. We saw transport workers, NHS staff and many other working people lose their lives to keep the rest of us safe and secure.
At noon today (external link), I shall be observing a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to all those working people who have died. And will, as Mayor of Haringey, call on all our people to renew our collective effort to prevent more deaths, injuries and disease affecting – and killing – people who are simply going to work.
As I stand and reflect, I will rededicate myself to the simple and age-old value that we should remember the dead, and fight for the living.
Cllr Adam Jogee,
The Mayor of Haringey.
