Over 100,000 people vaccinated in Haringey
The rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination programme has reached a significant milestone this week after 100,000 people received their jab in Haringey.
Latest figures from the NHS show 100,600 people across the borough have now had their first dose of the vaccine, and 40,220 people have now had both doses.
With the vaccination programme continuing to be rolled out at pace, the NHS is on track to offer all UK adults their first jab by the end of July. Everyone aged 40 years old and over is currently being invited to book their COVID-19 vaccine appointment (external link).
The vaccine programme is proving to be the UK’s best defence against the virus with recent research released by Public Health England (external link) showing that the vaccine is effective in both preventing cases of COVID-19 and reducing the severity of the virus in those who have been vaccinated.
The research reports that:
• 4 weeks after having a single dose of either vaccine, your risk of becoming ill with COVID-19 is around 60% lower, while a single dose of either vaccine reduces your chances of being hospitalised with COVID-19 by 80%.
• Even if you do catch COVID-19 more than 3 weeks after being vaccinated, the vaccine cuts your chance of passing the virus on to people you live with by up to 50%.
In Haringey, the vaccine programme is being administered by the NHS locally with significant input from local GP practices, the GP Federation and support from Haringey Council.
Great efforts are being made to reach everyone across the borough through outreach work and pop-up clinics to ensure that everyone can get vaccinated.
Dr Will Maimaris, Director of Public Health at Haringey Council said:
“We are delighted to reach this significant milestone in the delivery of our vaccine programme in Haringey. It is really important as the economy opens up, and we look forward to getting back to a more normal life, that everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated, does so.
“We know that coronavirus has affected our communities unequally, with residents in some of our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities having been more severely impacted. This is why we will continue our efforts to reach across our communities to achieve equity of vaccine take-up right across Haringey.
“If you believe you are eligible, please book your appointment by visiting Book a coronavirus vaccination - NHS (external link) or call 119 for free.”
