Take this step safely
The easing of many restrictions from Monday is welcome news for Haringey and most of us will be looking forward to meeting up with family and friends and returning to doing the things we enjoy. We must, however, proceed with caution.
To stop cases of COVID-19 rising again in Haringey, and to prevent a return to lockdown measures, it is important that we take this next step safely.
While cases of COVID-19 are very low in Haringey, the doubling of identified cases of the Indian variant this week in parts of the North West of England, and the presence of the variant in parts of London, is a concern to all and shows how rapidly the virus can spread.
When meeting with friends and family, the government has recommended that we can now take personal responsibility in relation to staying two metres apart. Remember that the risks of close contact may be greater for some, so please always take action to protect those most vulnerable in your life.
Getting vaccinated when it is your turn is your best defence against COVID-19 and significantly reduces your risk of hospitalisation, death and transmitting the virus to others.
Even if you have been vaccinated, everyone in England should continue to get tested twice a week using rapid (lateral flow device) testing. This is because one in three people with the virus do not have the symptoms but can pass it on to others.
Getting tested is easy - You can drop into any of the borough’s rapid test centres, without booking to get tested and get your results within an hour.
You can also pick up a FREE home test kit, containing 7 tests from any of the borough’s test centres or from many of Haringey’s community pharmacies. For more details on how to get tested visit our testing webpage.
Dr Will Maimaris, Haringey’s Director of Public Health said:
“The current low rates of COVID-19 are down to the sacrifices we have all made, and it is through our community pulling together that we are now in a place to confidently begin to reopen.
“To keep COVID-19 infection rates low, we must all take personal responsibility for our actions. When meeting up with others, especially those who you don’t often meet, be mindful of the risks, limit opportunities for transmission, including ensuring there is good ventilation.
“Please continue to get tested regularly for COVID-19 using lateral flow devices. This will give you peace of mind that you are not spreading the virus. None of us want a return to lockdown, so please play your part in keeping Haringey Safe.”
