O R Tambo Recreation Ground named among London’s favourite parks
O R Tambo Recreation Ground has been named as one of London’s favourite local parks (external link) in the UK’s Favourite Parks awards.
The annual contest, organised by the charity Fields in Trust (external link), saw over 30,000 people across the UK voting for their favourite green spaces.
Previously known as Albert Road Recreation Ground, O R Tambo Recreation Ground was renamed in 2021 in memory of Oliver Tambo, the world-renowned South African anti-apartheid campaigner, who lived in exile in Muswell Hill for over two decades.
The park first opened to the public in 1925, and has retained a Green Flag Award continuously since 2006. Facilities include football, basketball and tennis courts, as well as the much-loved Pavilion Café.
Cllr Julie Davies, Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Life, said:
In Haringey we’re proud of all our wonderful parks and green spaces, so it’s brilliant to see O R Tambo Recreation Ground named as one of London’s favourite local parks. I hope this recognition encourages even more residents to explore and enjoy the park and the many leisure and recreation opportunities it provides. I’d like to thank the Friends group and everyone else who helped us to make this park such a vibrant and welcoming public space – as well as everyone who went online to vote for their favourite local park.
