Boost your immunity this autumn
This year it’s more important than ever for people at risk to get their free flu vaccine and COVID-19 booster when they are invited by the NHS. The best time to get vaccinated is in the autumn, before the cold temperatures start.
While flu is unpleasant for most people, it can be dangerous and even life threatening for some, particularly those with certain health conditions or a weakened immune system.
More people are likely to get flu this winter as fewer people will have built up natural immunity to it during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, with COVID-19 cases beginning to increase again, this puts people at risk of contracting both viruses at once.
Research shows that if you get flu and COVID-19 at the same time, you're more likely to be seriously ill.
Eligible groups for the COVID-19 autumn booster vaccine:
- Pregnant women
- Adults 16-65 in at risk groups
- People 50 years old and over
- Health and social care workers
Eligible groups for the free flu vaccine:
- People with long term health conditions
- Pregnant women
- 2- and 3-year-olds – having turned 2 or 3 by 31 August 2022
- Children in all primary school years and Years 6-9 in secondary school
- People 50 years old and over
- Health and social care workers
Starting from mid-October, people aged 50 years old or over can have a free NHS flu vaccine. This is so at-risk groups can be offered vaccination first.
