Free ‘Care at Home’ parking permit for residents in CPZs across Haringey
Residents who require a home visit from a carer in a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) will soon be able to use a new free ‘Care at Home’ parking permit after Haringey Council announced a change in its policy which will come into effect next Spring.
Under the current scheme, care providers are meant to purchase a Resident Carer’s permit. Instead, carers tend to rely upon the residents who live in a in CPZ paying for visitor parking permits each time they need a carer to visit.
Following feedback from residents, some of whom require five carer visits a day, the Council listened and consulted during the summer to review the scheme.
As a result of a new co-produced policy, residents will now see ‘Care at Home’ permits become available after April next year. A new application process for residents needs to be designed, as does the new permit - which will be held by the care recipient but used solely by that person’s carers.
The new permit will be valid for three years and limited to one per applicant. Residents requiring more than one carer at a time can access paper visitor parking permits at the concessionary charge. The Council is committed to supporting people who are cared for at home, either by professional care providers or family and friends, helping them to stay in their own homes for as long as possible.
Cllr Seema Chandwani, Cabinet Member for Tackling Inequality and Resident Services, said:
“It is vital that we are talking on a regular basis with our residents and thanks to them and their families, we have listened to the concerns that were raised and have requested a change in our approach to carer parking.
“The social care landscape is complicated, but we heard how some residents were having five or more carers visit a day to assist with cleaning, feeding, bathing and administering medication. Some were receiving end of life care.
“The costs of paying for visitor permits was a financial burden on many with very little income.
“I’m so grateful to everyone who has requested a change in policy and worked with us to redesign a whole new permit and a more considerate approach.”
Stephen Whittle, a resident in N15, said:
“We are very pleased that the Council will be introducing a new free parking permit for those who have care at home.
“It is an additional financial burden and has been a worry for many residents.
“We look forward to being involved in the next stages of application design and to seeing the new permit in action next April.”
