Major breakthrough at Tottenham Green in council mission to get pools open
Haringey Council has taken a big step towards reopening the pools at Tottenham Green Pools and Fitness, after specialist electrical works were successfully completed on site this week.
Services including Marcus Garvey Library and Customer Service Centre reopened on Thursday after a three-day planned closure for installation of a new high voltage electrical system distribution board, a major milestone in the council’s mission to get the centre’s two pools back up and running following a major electrical failure resulting from flooding to the plant room.
Focus has now moved to finishing off those high voltage electrical system works by 18th December, in conjunction with the next stage of the process, including pump maintenance, pool cleaning, filter cleaning and lighting inspections. Cleaning operations are already underway at the site and testing of the components reliant on the high voltage system can also now start, replacing pieces of equipment where necessary.
Barring any unforeseen complications, this should see both the teaching and main pools reopen to the public in early 2024.
Cllr Emily Arkell, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Leisure, said:
“I’m delighted that these electrical distribution board works have been completed, which is a major step forward in our work to get these pools back up and running for the public.
“We know how important our leisure centres are to residents in Haringey, and we understand the frustration that this prolonged closure has caused. The process of replacing the high voltage electrical system at the site is extremely complex, but thanks to the specialist expertise of our council engineers and contractors, we have now successfully crossed this major first hurdle.
“I look forward to welcoming swimmers back to the pools in 2024, and continuing to work together with our residents to provide high quality leisure services in our borough.”
