Support for doctors when certifying a death

Advice for doctors when certifying a death, issuing a medical cause of death certificate (MCCD), referring a death to the Coroner.

All deaths must now be scrutinised by either a Coroner or a Medical Examiner. Where a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death certificate (MCCD) is to be issued. Guidance on completing this form can be found on GOV.UK.

Any medical practitioner who has attended the deceased within their lifetime can complete an MCCD if they can establish the cause of death to the best of their knowledge and belief.

Please do not give a completed MCCD to the family, instead refer the death to the Medical Examiner (ME)  for their scrutiny. Completed MCCD’s should not be sent to the Register Office as the ME will forward the approved MCCD on to us.

The Lead Medical Examiner for Haringey and Enfield is Rebecca Gillibrand who has a team of ME’s working for them.
