Health visiting services

All families with children under 5 years old can access the health visiting service in Haringey. The service is part of the Healthy Child Programme.

Health visitors will give you important information about health and wellbeing for you, your child and your family.

You'll be offered 5 health reviews between pregnancy and when your child starts school. These reviews happen when:

  • you're pregnant (between week 28 and 36)
  • your baby is born (between 10 and 14 days old)
  • your baby is between 6 and 8 weeks old
  • your child is 1 year old
  • your child is between 2 and 2-and-a-half years old

Read more on what to expect during the health reviews on the Whittington Health NHS Trust website.

Home visits for families who need extra support

Your health visitor is available to discuss any concerns about you or your baby.

Maternal early childhood sustained home visiting (MECSH)

Maternal early childhood sustained home visiting (MECSH) is a programme of home visiting for families who need extra help in their parenting journey.

MECSH provides personalised professional support for mothers and families as they transition into parenthood, and as their child grows and develops.

Support is available from pregnancy until the baby is 2 years old.

Your health visitor will offer you the MECSH programme if you're experiencing difficulties that are affecting how well you can support your child's health and development.

MECSH is a voluntary programme and parents can withdraw from it at any time.

Healthy Child Programme

The Health visiting service is part of Haringey's Healthy Child Programme, a public health scheme designed to:

  • help parents keep children healthy and safe so they reach their full potential
  • protect children from serious disease, through screening and vaccination
  • reduce childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating and physical activity
  • make sure families, children and young people at risk are supported as early as possible

The programme is split into 2 age groups:

  • 0 to 5 year olds, led by health visiting services
  • 5 to 19 years olds, led by the School Nursing Services
