Independent Traveller Training programme

The Independent Traveller Training programme helps young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) learn to travel independently between home and school. The training follows a step-by-step approach, with clear goals at each stage, to help young people learn to travel independently.

Benefits:

  • Develop essential life skills that extend beyond travel
  • Equip young people with the tools they need for adulthood
  • Improve future educational and employment opportunities
  • Reassure parents about their child's safety and capability
  • Encourage sustainable travel
  • Increase independence, confidence and overall wellbeing

This pathway ensures that young people receive the support and training they need to become confident and independent travellers.

Personal Travel Budgets programme

The Personal Travel Budgets Programme allows parents and carers to arrange school transportation based on their family's needs. Working with the School Travel Assistance team, parents and carers can customise travel plans for their child's school commute.

Examples of budget use

  • Car-related expenses
  • Public transport passes
  • Childcare for a sibling while taking another child to school
  • Shared travel (for example, carpooling)
  • Purchasing bikes

Benefits

  • Flexibility - Adjust travel to fit your work schedule, commitments and family needs
  • Choice - Decide what works best for your child's school travel
  • Support - Get guidance from our School Travel Assistance team to evaluate the best travel options for your child

Council Managed Transport Provision (CMTP)

Our CMTP service typically provides shared transport for multiple passengers travelling to the same or nearby schools. However, all the transport provided is appropriate to the individual's needs.

A travel assistance escort may be provided to support passengers during their journey.

We may also provide safety equipment, such as booster seats and harnesses. The use of harnesses requires parent/carer approval.
