Haringey's Disabled Children's Team, part of Children's Social Care Services, supports children and young people 0 to 18 with permanent and substantial disabilities and their families.
Our services:
- we provide guidance to families with children who have severe and complex disabilities
- ensuring children are safe and protected from neglect and abuse
- supporting children to be secure within their families or in alternative family settings if they are looked after children
- empower children and young people to achieve their full potential
- support as children transition to adulthood and the transfer to Adult Services, if appropriate
To access specialist services such as the Disabled Children’s Team, a child must have a 'permanent and substantial' disability. Children with a disability are assessed according to the impact any impairment has on their quality of life and that of their family.
Therefore, an assessment takes place before any social work service is offered. If the team cannot provide a service, they will advise on other possibilities for where a family may go to receive support and/or resources.
Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for the Disabled Children's Team are:
- children and their families whose main need for services arises out of the child’s disabilities; and
- these conditions have a substantial or critical impact on the quality of the child/young persons and/or their families' lives; and
- the needs cannot be met by universal/targeted services alone; and /or
- the child’s disability is both permanent and substantial.

Short Breaks
The team aims to promote the care of children within their own families and communities by providing short breaks if appropriate. An assessment will determine the level and type of short break that best meets the child's or young person's needs. More information can be found on the Short Breaks page.
Transition to adult services
With the consent of the young person and/or their family, young people receiving services from the Disabled Children's Team can be referred to Adult Services from age 14. This referral should occur before they turn 16, allowing Adult Services to assess the young person's eligibility for their services when they reach 18.
