George Padmore Institute – building repair appeal
The George Padmore Institute (GPI) was co-founded in 1991 by two of Haringey’s most cherished locals, John La Rose and Sarah White. Based on Stroud Green Road, the GPI is an archive and educational centre relating to the black community of Caribbean, African and Asian descent.
We safeguard documents on the history of the struggle for racial equality and social justice and ensure they remain accessible to the public. With 14,000+ items across 18 collections, our records bear witness to moments of historical significance, including the New Cross Massacre, the Black Parents Movement, the Black Education Movement and the Caribbean Artists Movement. By promoting the creativity and resilience of these grassroots organisations, we support the ongoing fight against discrimination.
Our archive is unique in that it grew around the activism of a network of key players in each of the campaigns or movements in our collections. At the heart of this network was John La Rose, a tireless activist who was passionate about transforming society and ensuring each generation in black and brown communities is made aware of the vital contribution they have made to UK history.
