50th anniversary of the Black Parents Movement

April 2025 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Black Parents Movement (BPM), an organisation formed in 1975 following the arrest of an innocent West Indian student named Cliff McDaniel in Haringey on false accusations of ‘breaching the peace’ and ‘assaulting a police officer’.

To mark this anniversary, the George Padmore Institute (GPI) have developed a resource detailing the foundation of the BPM, its governance, key national and international campaigns and the organisation’s legacy.

The 18-slide presentation also highlights key GPI publications that mention the history of the BPM which are all available to buy at their online shop.

You can access this resource on the GPI website or on their YouTube channel.

Read the issue of Race Today from October 1976 with extracts from public speeches made by BPM .
