The latest addition to Haringey’s recreational facilities had its official launch on Wednesday 17 May, when Cllr. Mike Hakata, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment, and Transport threw the first ball to mark the opening of the new pétanque court in Priory Park.
Though it originated in the south of France, the game of pétanque is now played throughout the world. It’s very easy to play at any age and ability level and doesn’t require expensive kit to get started.
The court (or terrain, as it’s known) was made possible by a grant from the National Lottery to Hornsey Pétanque Club. The Club has also funded another terrain at nearby Alexandra Park, having obtained donations from CField Construction Ltd and a private donor.
Cllr Hakata welcomed the new facilities, saying:
“I'm delighted to see the arrival of these new pétanque courts, which is a great example of how the council is working in partnership with residents to develop new leisure opportunities and build more active, independent community groups in our wonderful parks and greenspaces.”
Peter Emery, Chair of Hornsey Pétanque Club hopes that:
“This may be a model for other local clubs and societies wanting to introduce new activities into parks and greenspaces alongside Haringey Council’s Parks Department”.
Also attending the opening ceremony were Alice Tringham, Chris Chadwick and Flora Bardoshi representing the Friends of Priory Park and Tom Hitchman representing Pétanque England, the sport’s governing body.
Although the funds were raised by Hornsey Pétanque Club, ownership of the terrains is vested in the respective park authorities, and are assets for the whole community for all to use. Care was taken in the design of the terrains to make them accessible to people with mobility restrictions, including wheelchair users.
Following the ceremony, the guests were treated to a demonstration by club members, and tried their hand at some ‘shooting’ and ‘pointing’ - some of the techniques of playing pétanque.
