Cabinet Member Focus: Cllr Ruth Gordon

Cabinet Member for Housebuilding, Placemaking and Development, Cllr Ruth Gordon is a proud and passionate advocate for housing in Haringey. Her commitment to ensuring people across the borough live in safe, affordable and sustainable homes has been a core priority since she was appointed in 2021.

We look back at some of our achievements in this area over the last year and look forward to what is in store for the next 12 months.

Highlights from the last 12 months:

  • Our ambitious Council house building programme which aims to deliver 3000 homes by 2031 has made significant progress. Work is already underway on a staggering 2,000 homes and almost 200 have been completed.
  • Sustainable materials have been used on each of these new builds to help minimise the impact on the environment as well as achieve a zero-carbon footprint during construction.
  • Our vision for Wood Green Voices, a flagship example of engagement with the community, was approved by Cabinet in April 2023. As we look forward and continue to strengthen our relationships with the community, we will ensure Wood Green meets the aspirations of people who live and work here.
  • Our work in Tottenham Hale is a fantastic example of our commitment to build more council homes and open up this area for families. This includes developments such as Hale Wharf, Water Tull and Rosa Luxemburg Apartments. Not only have new residents been welcomed into the community but 600 new high quality council homes have been built for existing residents to enjoy.

Looking forward to the next 12 months:

  • As our housing programme progresses, we will continue to collaborate with our residents to ensure the homes we build meet their individual needs and requirements.
  • With some of the biggest development projects taking place in the borough’s history, at Broadwater Farm and High Road West - residents are set to benefit from a major transformation that will include new council homes, open spaces and a new library and learning centre which will bring new jobs as well as other opportunities to support the community and local businesses.
  • We will continue to work alongside our community by expanding our engagement programme even further to achieve our manifesto commitment to provide three new nature reserves across the borough. This also includes the improvement plan which will see a huge new community hub as well as improved sport and play equipment in Down Lane Park.
  • Following Cabinet’s agreement to refurbish the Civic Centre, we look forward to developing this over the next year and providing civic building that will also honour Haringey’s past.
