Transformation of Tottenham Hale open spaces gets £6m cash boost

Community-led plans to deliver two of the most ambitious parks projects in the capital have moved a step closer thanks to a massive £6m cash injection from Haringey Council.

Last night (13 June) Cabinet gave the green light to invest £5.85m to transform The Paddock and Down Lane Park that will benefit Tottenham Hale for generations.

Alongside these green space projects, the council is delivering a series of significant placemaking benefits for the area including major investment in 700 council homes and a new district health centre.

Cllr Ruth Gordon, Cabinet Member for House Building, Placemaking and Development said:

This announcement is just the latest step in making our vision of a fairer, greener Tottenham Hale a reality.

Our flagship green and open spaces programmes at Down Lane Park and The Paddock have been shaped with the community, for the community, exemplifying the commitments made to residents through the Haringey Deal.

The co-designed masterplan for Down Lane Park will see in total over £9m investment in new and improved facilities for the community, climate resilience and a new community hub to serve the neighbourhood.

At the Paddock we are creating the borough’s first new Nature Reserve in over a decade, investing in improvements across the site including educational facilities, and incorporating land around the riverine edges to create an additional 1.9 acres of publicly accessible green space.

The Cabinet decision honours the council’s commitment to reinvest land receipts into securing long term and direct benefits for Tottenham Hale residents.

Cllr Gordon added:

It represents a further major investment by the council in the green and social infrastructure that will make a genuine difference to the lives and futures of Tottenham Hale’s residents.  The 700 new council homes at Tottenham Hale are some of the highest quality homes in London and they will now have some fantastic green spaces right on their doorstep.

The council are ambitious for Tottenham Hale, which is rooted in what residents, businesses and visitors have told us they’d like to see here now and in the future. We are committed to empowering local voices to help shape a strong local identity for this changing neighbourhood that is uniquely and distinctively Tottenham Hale. A Tottenham Hale for all.

The building of 3,200 new high-quality homes is already underway or complete, of which 40 per cent are affordable, including almost 700 high quality and sustainable new council homes with direct access to either Down Lane Park or The Paddock.

Transformation of the area will also deliver on residents’ priorities for new community facilities including a new district health centre and community hub.

The area also benefits from good and outstanding local schools and will see comprehensive healthy streets improvements and major investment in green infrastructure such as over 400 new trees being planted.

Some 35,000sqm additional commercial space is also being delivered to support the retail and commercial offer in Tottenham Hale and create new local jobs and business opportunities.
