Thousands of residents in Tottenham Hale will enjoy the huge benefits of a transformed greenspace on their doorstep designed for and by the community.
Haringey Council agreed to accept £750k additional funding from the Mayor of London’s Green and Resilient Spaces funding at a Cabinet Meeting on Tuesday night (July 11) that will bring total investment in Down Lane Park to more than £9m and kickstart delivery.
The cash will see the park revamped with a new community hub, café and garden and improved children’s play spaces, alongside new park entrances and better pathways to increase accessibility.
The co-designed plans will boost biodiversity with a sensory garden, meadow planting, and fruit trees.
As well as physical improvements, the funding will enable a programme of community development activities which will upskill residents to get green jobs.
Cllr Ruth Gordon, Cabinet Member for Council House Building, Placemaking and Local Economy said:
“The Mayor’s funding will enable an amazing programme of community development activities led by our partner Living Under One Sun to take place.
“It will address health inequalities by breaking down the barriers some residents face when accessing green spaces, alongside a sports programme and green skills programme that will create pathways to green jobs and upskill residents to contribute to maintenance of the park.
“We have come a long way on this project and the Down Lane Park improvements showcase what can be achieved in our borough when we all work together. £9.1m will transform this open space in Tottenham and create a high-quality park which will serve residents for years to come. This is truly a once in a generation opportunity.
“We can now move forward to delivery to reap the rewards of the hard work, time, and commitment the community and council have made to securing the future of the park. And move one step closer to delivering and a fairer and greener Tottenham Hale.”
