Stoptober is back, calling on smokers to join more than 2.5 million others who have made a quit attempt during the October campaign since it launched in 2012.
One in five adults in Haringey smoke, and smoking remains the main cause of preventable illness and premature death in our borough. Quitting is one of the best things a smoker can do for their health, as well as giving you extra money in your pocket. Those who have given up will have more energy, feel healthier, and breath more easily. On average a smoker could have around £2,000 more to spend annually by quitting.
Here in Haringey, our partners at One You Haringey are hosting information stalls in the borough, where smokers can stop by to get help quitting;
- Thursday 28 September, 1 – 3.30pm, at North Middlesex University Hospital in the atrium
- Friday 6 Oct, 10am – 3pm, at The Whittington Hospital in the first-floor atrium
- Thursday 12 October, 1 – 3.30pm, at North Middlesex University Hospital in the atrium
Haringey resident, Dudu (aged 70), quit her 20 a day habit after 40 years with the help of One You Haringey. She told us “My sleeping is much better and now I can sleep all the way through the night. I would advise anyone who wants to give up smoking to do it - the sooner the better!”. Dudu’s health has improved rapidly since she gave up smoking.
Councillor Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care & Wellbeing, said “Quitting smoking can have a huge impact on people’s health and wellbeing, increasing the chance of living healthier for longer. Smoking is connected to many of the very serious health conditions we see affecting our community, so quitting could have huge impact for individuals and their families. It’s never too late to give up and feel the benefits. Our services are supportive and informative, and I recommend people give them a go.”
