Help fill our streets with trees

Residents can help build a greener Haringey by sponsoring a tree in a street or park of their choice.

Planting season starts later this month – so there is still time for individuals, neighbours, businesses or community groups to make a request for planting this winter.

This is the third year the council has worked in partnership with the national charity Trees for Streets to empower and inspire individuals or groups to bring a slice of nature to their doorstep and help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Planting trees in the borough’s streets and green spaces helps capture carbon, absorbs air pollution, reduces flood risk, creates shaded areas and nurtures wildlife.

Cllr Mike Hakata, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment and Transport, said:

Trees have the power to transform neighbourhoods and are so important for our health and wellbeing.

Our partnership with Trees for Streets is making it easy for residents to help us plant more trees, and the scheme is proving very popular.

We’re very grateful for those residents who have got involved so far and hope that many more will sponsor a tree, making where they live a better place for everyone.

The council has set out targets to increase canopy cover to 30 per cent in all wards and plant at least 10,000 trees by 2030 to kick start this process.  Last year alone, it planted 1,500 trees – a Haringey record.

To sponsor a tree, simply head to https://treesforstreets.org/haringey, pick a spot for your sponsored tree, then give a few details – the Trees for Streets team will handle the rest.   The request deadline for a tree to be planted this winter is Sunday, 19 November 2023.

You can view an online map showing trees planted in Haringey over the last year on the council’s groundbreaking tree web pages.  Clicking on the tree symbol in the map reveals if it was one of those funded by the community.
