Community Carbon Fund open for applications

Community groups and residents who want to help the borough tackle the escalating threat of climate change are invited to bid for funds of up to £50,000 to support their carbon-cutting projects.

Haringey Council has launched the third round of its major £300,000 fund to support community-led sustainability projects in the borough.

The four-year Community Carbon Fund is welcoming applications from this year’s £70,000 pot to start or expand decarbonisation projects.

Applications looking to undertake local energy reduction projects are particularly welcome.

Cllr Mike Hakata, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment and Transport said:

I’m delighted we are launching the third round of this important fund.

It provides a fantastic opportunity to unlock the talents and creativity of our communities so that together we can tackle the climate crisis and help ensure a fair and sustainable future for our borough.

Apply now and help us make Haringey net zero carbon.

The council’s planning policies for new buildings set high sustainability standards and council teams work hard and are successful at achieving net zero developments.  Where developers prove they cannot meet the necessary standards on site they must make a ‘carbon offset’ payment, which helps fund off site projects, such as the Community Carbon Fund.

The Community Carbon Fund is in line with the Haringey Deal, which sets out a commitment to tap into the strengths, knowledge, expertise and passion of Haringey’s people to tackle the big challenges we face, including climate change.

Funding has previously helped community groups add solar panels and double glazing for their café; build a well-insulated, eco-friendly community hub; set up a repair café to fix faulty goods and reduce waste; and install LED lightbulbs across homes in Northumberland Park.

Applications for this round of funding can be submitted online or emailed to carbonmanagementteam@haringey.gov.uk before midnight on Sunday 7 January 2024.

If you are thinking of applying and have questions, then attend one of the remaining Q&A sessions.  For more information on the Community Carbon Fund and to apply, visit here
