London’s Deputy Mayor visits first zero carbon council homes in Haringey

Haringey has unveiled its first zero carbon council homes and was thrilled to welcome London’s Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development to see the benefits it is bringing to residents in the borough.
Zero carbon council homes - Watts Close

Tom Copley joined Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet and Cabinet Member Cllr Ruth Gordon to meet some of the 18 families reaping the rewards of living in the award-winning development in Watts Close, Tottenham.

The scheme uses super-efficient insulation, solar panels and air source heat pumps to cut household bills and emissions, and a green roof increases the area’s biodiversity.

Cllr Ruth Gordon, Cabinet Member for House Building, Placemaking and Local Economy, said:  “We are very proud to see the completion of this landmark project in our borough.

"Eighteen families will benefit from the opportunity to live in a secure, warm, safe, high-quality council home, built to the very best green and design standards.

“I’ve been especially pleased to welcome Tom Copley to Haringey so he can see first-hand how the support of the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is helping us deliver on an ambitious housebuilding programme that is truly transforming lives.”

The recently completed development includes two four-bedroom homes while a third of apartments have at least three bedrooms, all let at council rents.

Two of the homes are fully wheelchair accessible and provided with car parking spaces.  Ground floor apartments feature private gardens and upper apartments have balconies.

The homes are expected to produce 11% more energy than they will use for heating, hot water and other energy requirements.

The outside space incorporates a children’s play area, alongside new trees and extensive green landscaping.

The brand new zero carbon development marks the completion of 200 council homes by Haringey Council with 2,000 underway as part of the delivery of 3,000 by 2031.

Watts Close has already gained a Gold Award from Secured by Design, the national police crime prevention initiative, owing to the embedded measures that ensure residents feel safe and secure in their new homes and surroundings.

The development transforms a site previously occupied by an unused community hall and bungalows built as temporary accommodation in the 1950’s which had long since ceased to be fit-for-purpose.
