Plans unveiled to improve toilet provision at three Haringey train stations

Commuters at three stations in Haringey are set to benefit as part of a £3m project to install or refurbish accessible and free-to-use toilets across the public transport network in London announced by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

South Tottenham and White Hart Lane Overground stations have made the shortlist for the first round of works by Transport for London (TfL) alongside five others across the capital.

Meanwhile, TfL are looking to make the existing facilities at Seven Sisters Overground station accessible as part of this initial phase of the project.

Recognising their importance in helping residents lead fuller and more independent lives, Haringey Councill’s Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing, Cllr Lucia das Neves, has been lobbying City Hall and TfL to improve this provision in the borough.

Welcoming the development as the first step in a wider piece of work, Cllr das Neves commented:

We’re glad to hear this news about enhancing and expanding public toilet facilities across the TfL network.

This aligns with our co-production of a long-term public toilet plan with community groups like ‘Loos for Haringey’ to address the needs of the community.

We know from the engagement we have undertaken that it’s not just the spread of the facilities available, but how easily they can be accessed.

Often facilities at transport hubs are located behind ticket barriers. This poses a big challenge for many of our communities, so the announcement today is welcome.

The Deputy Mayor of London for Transport, Seb Dance, launched the initiative at White Hart Lane station on Wednesday (30 October 2024).

He was met there by the Deputy Leader of Haringey Council, Cllr Sarah Williams, as a plan was unveiled to ensure customers are always within 20 minutes of a toilet, without having to change trains.

Cllr Williams stated:

I was delighted to welcome the Deputy Mayor of London for Transport, Seb Dance, to Haringey and it’s fantastic that three Overground stations in our borough are set to benefit from these new and improved toilet facilities.

We know that having access to toilet facilities is important for all residents. However, some groups have a specific particular need for access to toilets and good provision removes barriers to them staying active.

These stations were chosen according to a number of factors, including whether the location is a terminus station, operates night services and has:

  • high passenger footfall
  • onward connections
  • proximity to other toilets on the network
  • step-free access
