Residents help fill our streets with trees

Planting season is well underway with residents in Tottenham helping build a greener borough by sponsoring dozens of trees in their streets.

Cabinet Members Cllr Mike Hakata and Cllr Ruth Gordon joined ward councillor Cllr Reg Rice and residents to help plant two of the trees in Hanbury Road, N17, this week.

This is the fourth year the council has worked in partnership with the national charity Trees for Streets to empower and inspire individuals or groups to bring a slice of nature to their doorstep and help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Planting trees in the borough’s streets and green spaces helps capture carbon, absorbs air pollution, reduces flood risk, creates shaded areas and nurtures wildlife.

The council has set out targets to increase canopy cover to 30 per cent in all wards and plant at least 10,000 trees by 2030 to kick start this process, which included a record 2,500 last year.
