Today (12 March), on No Smoking Day, Haringey Council has signed the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control to re-affirm its commitment to addressing smoking-related harm.
The declaration is a commitment to ensure tobacco control is part of mainstream public health work and that we are taking comprehensive action to address the harm from smoking.
Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Cllr Lucia das Neves was joined by Chief Executive Andy Donald and Director of Public Health Will Maimaris for the declaration signing.
This is part of our ambition to make Haringey a healthier borough for everyone.
Over the last few years, the council has:
- Promoted stop smoking initiatives such as Stoptober, No Smoking Day.
- Worked with schools to provide vaping and e-cigarette guidance for students.
- Supported the Tobacco and Vapes Bill in Parliament.
- Created local School Superzones initiatives to tackle smoking around children.
- Promoted smoke-free environments locally.
- Tackled illicit trade locally and seized illicit items through the trading standards team.
Councillor Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care & Wellbeing, said:
Quitting smoking can have a huge impact on your health and wellbeing, and will increase the chance of living a healthier life for longer.
We are signing this declaration to ensure we’re tackling smoking harms at every opportunity we can and to support the Government’s ambition to make England smokefree by 2030.
Residents can attend a pop-up One You Haringey event at Wood Green Library between 10am-3pm on 12 March to get help and expert advice to stop smoking.
One in five adults in Haringey smoke, and smoking remains the main cause of preventable illness and premature death in our borough.
