Waste not, pay a lot: £6K in fines issued

Ten Haringey businesses have been fined a total of £6,550 for waste offences as the council continues its enforcement focus on companies who are evading the law.

Throughout February and March, fixed penalty notices were issued for offences such as fly-tipping and and unlicensed skips following calls from residents for tougher action.

Among those fined were nail shops unlawfully disposing of waste in black bins designated solely for residents of nearby flats. Businesses on Tottenham High Road and Archway Road were also found dumping large amounts of commercial waste onto public highways, with each receiving £1,000 fines.

One business was penalised for discarding waste containing sensitive information, while another was fined after enforcement officers witnessed waste being dumped first-hand. Both offences resulted in £1,000 fines.

Additional penalties included three fines of £150 for unlicensed shop front displays and a £100 fixed penalty for an unlicensed skip.

Cllr Seema Chandwani, Cabinet Member for Tackling Inequality and Resident Services, said:

Our residents have made it clear - they want stronger action against waste dumping, and rightly so. Everyone deserves to live, work, and enjoy a clean borough, and taking pride in our surroundings should be second nature.

While most businesses manage their waste responsibly, a small minority fail to do so. It’s crucial that we all respect our environment and contribute to keeping it clean. Those who neglect this responsibility will face consequences.

We urge businesses to comply with regulations - not just to avoid fines, but to help build a cleaner, more sustainable community where people feel encouraged to support local businesses.

A total of 2,554 fines, totalling £1,393,350 were issued last year (April 2024 – March 2025) to offenders who were caught fly-tipping and littering.

These fines underscore Haringey’s commitment to encouraging a shared responsibility for the borough’s public spaces. Residents are urged to play their part by disposing of waste correctly and reporting any instances of fly-tipping.
