Haringey People in Focus: Haringey’s parks and green spaces through the decades

Haringey parks have played a major role in some historic and highly memorable moments over the last 60 years and contributed significantly to the Rebel Borough we call home.

Ducketts Common has often found itself at the centre of the fight for equality and unity, being the site of the Battle of Wood Green in 1977 and the Smash the Backlash rally in 1987 – read more about these pivotal events in our history timeline (Haringey People magazine summer 2025 issue pages 18-19).

Finsbury Park has also been the scene of some noteworthy moments. In 1996 the first RESPECT festival was held there, organised by the Trade Union Congress to campaign against racism and celebrate diversity. Featuring artists including Chumbawamba and Asian Dub Foundation, it started a long tradition of major musical events in the park.

The rich history of Haringey’s parks and green spaces goes back long before the formation of the borough. Dating as far back as the early 11th century, Bruce Castle Park was created from the remains of the ancient Bruce Castle family estate. It was bought by the council in 1892.

The northern side of the park is home to a magnificent, ancient oak tree that is believed to be around 500 years old.

A Grade I-listed, 16th century manor house is also located within the park and it’s where residents and visitors can find Bruce Castle Museum and Archive, which houses Haringey’s local history collections. It has  been open for nearly 120 years, since 1906.

Highgate Wood is one of four ancient woodlands in Haringey with the other three being Bluebell Wood, Coldfall Wood and Queen’s Wood.

Originally forming part of the ancient Forest of Middlesex and covering much of London, Hertfordshire and Essex, it was referenced in the Doomsday Book – a manuscript record of the Great Survey of much of England and parts of Wales completed in 1086 at the request of William the Conqueror.
