Tomorrow (Wednesday 6 August) for SAHM, there’s an arts and crafts session at our Library of the Month St Ann’s (10:30am-12noon) where children aged between four and 12 can make their very own peacock.
Instruction will be given during this session, but younger kids will need their carer’s/parent’s assistance and children under nine should be accompanied by a carer/parent.
There’s also Torn Paper Rangoli design activities at Marcus Garvey (Saturday 9 August, 10:30am-11:30am, suitable for children under 10) and Coombes Croft libraries (Saturday 16 August, 2pm-4pm, suitable for children aged eight to 12) across the next two weekends.
Centring on this year’s SAHM theme of ‘Roots to Routes,’ the first of two ‘DAYTIMERS present Mehfil’ events will take place at Marcus Garvey Library on Saturday (9 August, 12noon-2pm).
Participants will be able to explore Haringey Council’s timeline of South Asian history as well as map their – or their family’s – migration to the borough, the routes they’ve taken and their roots to Haringey.
They’ll also be able to delve into the archives and share their unique stories onto a collective map, while celebrating their heritage through collages, discussions and drawings and collectively learning about the significance and impact South Asian migration has had on the borough.
For the second ‘DAYTIMERS present Mehfil’ session at Hornsey Library next Tuesday (12 August, 2:30pm-4:30pm), residents can join artist Meera Shakti Osborne for an interactive workshop to map our local South Asian resistance histories in Haringey and beyond. Meera will then guide attendees on how they can make some collages/zines, thinking about this history and how it relates to now.
In the workshop, attendees can discover archival photos of the Asian youth movement, the space they had by Ducketts Common and in Bruce Grove and photos from Asia Centre in the shopping centre.
