The Wolves Lane Horticulture Centre will play host to our Black History Haringey 365 (BHH365) launch event on Tuesday 7 October 2025 (6pm-9pm).
There will be live music and spoken word performances from emerging and exciting local musicians and poets.
Chaired by Haringey Council’s Director of Culture and Communities, Kenneth Olumuyiwa Tharp, there will also be a panel discussion reflecting on the 50 years since the Black Parents Movement was established in north London, in response to the disparities faced by Black children in the education system. As a grassroots movement, it was led by Black parents advocating for better educational opportunities, resources and support for their children.
Panellists will include the Chair of the George Padmore Institute, Roxy Harris, Black Rootz’ Paulette Henry and the media executive, satirist and writer, Nels Abbey. There will be an opportunity for members of the audience to ask questions from the floor.
This launch event is open to everyone and we look forward to seeing you there. Book your tickets today!
This event forms part of the council’s annual Black History Haringey 365 programme, which promotes Black history education throughout the borough and shines a light on the fascinating and diverse history of Black communities in Haringey.
The Leader of Haringey Council, Peray Ahmet, said:
We are proud our Black History Haringey 365 programme ensures that Black history stays at the top of the agenda in our borough all year round. It’s too important to highlight for just one month of the year.
Black history is everyone’s history here in Haringey and Black people and communities have made a profound contribution to our borough – from the earliest recorded Black residents in the 16th century through to the Windrush generation and beyond.
I hope all residents will take some time to learn about and celebrate Black history and heritage by exploring the wide range of activities, events and resources on our website.
Some other highlights in this year’s programme include:
- Celebrating Black History with the Pop-Up Shop Project at the Rec Shop
- A Creative Call to Action: I’m a Rebel Patchwork workshop at Chestnuts Community Centre
- Bruce Castle Museum’s walking tour: The Black History of Stroud Green
- Black Housing Cooperative: Past and Present, film screening and discussion at the Post Bar
- Black Rootz Mental Wealth Day at Wolves Lane Horticulture Centre
- Nail Art workshop with Queens of the City
- Sheltered Housing’s Culture through Creativity Day
- & much, much more besides!
The programme has over 60 events in October and throughout the year ahead, including craft workshops, film screenings, markets, walking tours and many more creative activities for residents to explore Black history in Haringey.
Many events respond to the national theme; ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’, recognising the resilience, strength and unwavering commitment to progress that defines Black communities in the borough and around the world.
There will be events in Bruce Castle Museum, community centres, parks, supporting housing and other spaces.
There is something for everyone to get involved in, learn from and be inspired by.
As well as all the event listings, the Black History Haringey 365 webpages also contain learning resources for schools, students and teachers as well as (very popular) Black History quizzes.
New resources have also been developed by the George Padmore Institute this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the Black Parents Movement in Haringey.
