Haringey continues to develop innovative response to gambling harms

Haringey has become the first council in London to sign the Gambling Workplace Charter.

This Workplace Charter provides a framework for action to help employers and staff build good practice in health and work in their organisation.

Key tenets of the charter include commitments from senior management, promoting a positive culture, offering support and training for staff, helping those who need it into recovery, and ensure gambling harms have equal parity to policies regarding drugs and alcohol.

As part of the celebrations around this signing, the council also welcomed Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Jeanelle de Gruchy, to Haringey to learn more about our innovative work in tackling gambling harms.

On Dr de Gruchy’s visit, the DCMO learnt more about Haringey’s local pathways for residents with gambling issues, internal training for staff, the council’s advertising policy on gambling, and more.

On November 18, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care & Wellbeing, Councillor Lucia das Neves visited the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Gambling. The group heard more about Haringey is tackling gambling harms across the borough in partnership with our communities in innovative ways.

Cllr Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care & Wellbeing said:

“Gambling harms are associated with homelessness, domestic violence and other harms to children and family members, financial debt, mental and physical health concerns, suicide ideation, and suicide.

“It is devastating for individuals, families, and work colleagues, which is why we are working with communities to tackle gambling harms.

“We have a comprehensive programme that supports individuals, trains professionals, educates young people in schools and campaigns for changes to the law that can help reduce harm.”

Cllr Dana Carlin, Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Services, said:

“Being the first council in London to meet the accreditation for the Gambling Workplace Charter shows our dedication to supporting affected staff.”

This follows earlier updates that Haringey became the first council in the UK to sign up to the Coalition to End Gambling Ads, and that our work on gambling harms won an MJ Award in the Reducing Health Inequalities category.
