Welfare and wellbeing support
There’s help available locally for anyone who’s struggling through the winter and pandemic.
The Haringey Food Network is a partnership of community food providers working together to ensure equal access to food for all Haringey residents. Food is distributed through the network to Haringey households in need of support, including through food banks in the borough. If you or someone you know needs food support, there’s a map of food hubs in Haringey here.
There’s also assistance available with housing and council tax costs. People experiencing financial hardship and needing help keeping up with rent may be able to access Discretionary Housing Payments – to qualify you must be in receipt of Housing Benefit or Universal Credit for housing costs. Those on a low income can apply to the Council Tax Reduction Scheme – visit our Council Tax webpages to find out more.
If you or someone you know is struggling to pay for energy costs, you may qualify for crisis vouchers and debt relief assistance. We’re also offering one-off grants of up to £500 to support residents who are required to self-isolate. Where possible, we will also support people with no recourse to public funds.
Help is available for Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) or ‘shielded’ residents from our Connected Communities team. If you or someone you know needs help, please call the phoneline on 0208 489 4431, open Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm. If you’re unable to work due to having to self-isolate, you may be eligible for government support – see the NHS website for more details.
There’s help available with school clothing costs. Households with a child eligible for free school meals who began secondary school in September 2020 can apply for a one-off grant of up to £60. The closing date for applications is 31 March 2021, and your child’s date of birth must be between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009.
There’s also plenty of assistance available for businesses. Local business grants are available to support firms affected by Covid restrictions. If you own a business that needs assistance to open and operate safely during the pandemic, get in touch with our Covid-Safe Business Campaign, who will be happy to help.
