What an abandoned vehicle is
Our officers may consider a vehicle abandoned if it:
- shows sign’s it’s not been used for a long time, like rusty brakes and flat tyres
- is damaged, run down or unroadworthy
- is burnt out
- lacks 1 or more of its number plates
- contains waste
- does not have wheels
- has broken windows
A vehicle can be considered abandoned even if it's taxed and has a current MOT certificate.
What happens to abandoned vehicles
If we think a vehicle’s abandoned we will try to contact the registered owner.
If the car’s in good condition, and we contact the registered owner, we remove the vehicle to the car pound. We write to the owner giving them 7 days to collect the vehicle before it’s disposed of.
If there is no registered keeper, we may place a notice on the vehicle saying we'll remove and dispose of it with 24 hours.
If the vehicle’s in such bad condition that it should be destroyed, we remove and dispose of the vehicle within 1 working day of the notice expiring.
If we think a vehicle is dangerous or hazardous, we can remove it immediately.
