Turnpike Lane and Station Road shutter gallery

As well as being a busy shopping street, Turnpike Lane is now an outdoor art gallery!

In collaboration with Bud Studio, local artists have worked with traders to create striking artwork on shop shutters along Turnpike Lane. With a range of multi-cultural businesses, the artworks created are bold, ambitious and reflect and reaffirm the area’s cultural identities.

The Turnpike Lane and Station Road Shutter Gallery aims to:

• support local businesses who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 
• pay local creatives for their work at a time where income might be significantly reduced
• showcase local creativity and solidarity

Project background

This opportunity was open to both emerging artists who were looking to develop their practice and established artists with relevant experience. The initial Open Call was to put together a shortlist of artists. Shortlisted artists were matched with a trader.

We welcomed applications from artists and creative practitioners who had a connection to Turnpike Lane and the surrounding area.

Notes on some of the artworks

Artist Tash Creates worked with Top Mobile on their shutter design. The owner wanted something bold and nature inspired. Their design honours Wood Green’s natural spaces and symbolises growth and how we are all rooted together as one. 

Isabella Mitchell designed First Choice Carpet’s shutter. The shutter design is an abstract assembly of interiors. It is a night-time scene, featuring rolls of carpets and beds. The underground station makes an appearance too. 

Eloisa Henderson has created a beautiful piece of art on the shutter of Kaya Tailoring. The fun and vibrant collage represents the business perfectly, with a nod to the machinery and tools used in the shop. 

Horace worked with TT1 Tyres. His design was inspired by pop art and comic book art. The business' four shutters reminded him of a comic strip and the primary colours in their logo went well with a pop art style.
