Bulky item collections

New environmental regulations mean that bulky waste containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) must be collected separately. POPs are dangerous chemicals that accumulate in the environment and can harm human health.
Items requiring separate collection include:
- upholstered furniture such as sofas, armchairs, dining chairs
- cushioned items such as stools, cushions, bean bags
- child safety items such as pushchairs, car seats
These items will still be collected, but we now have to use different vehicles and teams. This means these items may be collected at different times or a day later.
On the day
Make sure items are:
- ready for collection by 6.30am
- easy to access
- placed outside the front boundary of your property
- at street level – this means not placed up or down stairs
- visible to the collection crew from the road
- covered, if they are fabric items – for example sofas or mattresses
Housing estates/blocks of flats
If you live on a housing estate or in a block of flats, place your items at:
- street level outside of any gated bin area – do not leave items in communal areas as this poses a fire risk
- a nearby collection point (housing estate collections)
Items that can be collected
We can collect:
- beds and bed frames
- bedside cabinets
- bookcases
- carpets and rugs inside a tied bag (must be less than 80 litres)
- chairs
- computers and monitors
- cookers
- dishwashers
- doors (no fire doors or metal doors)
- freezers
- fridges
- garden waste (one-off collections)
- mattresses
- ovens
- printers
- sofas and sofa beds
- tables
- tumble driers
- TVs
- wardrobes
- washing machines
Items that cannot be collected
We cannot collect:
- asbestos
- carpets and rugs (not inside a tied bag)
- car batteries
- construction waste (bricks, stonework, cement, paint, plasterboard)
- gas bottles and cylinders
- hazardous waste or chemicals
- house renovation waste
- masonry and tiles
- pianos
- rubble and soil
- tree trunks and thick branches
- tyres
