Why gambling is an issue

Gambling is a major industry in the UK with recorded profits of £14.1 billion in 2022. In 2018, 24.5 million people in England – 54% of the adult population – reported that they had gambled in some form. Advertising for gambling is common across billboards, TV, online, and sports sponsorships.

While it may be a harmless social activity for most, we know that too many people and communities are suffering because of gambling. It is thought that 1.8% of Londoners – around 165,000 people - are experiencing problem gambling and that for every one of these, 6 people close to them are also being harmed.

This means that nearly 1 million Londoners, and over 28,000 Haringey residents, may be negatively affected by gambling. This can include debt, homelessness, crime, unemployment, poor mental health, and family breakdown. Haringey currently hosts the 3rd highest number of betting shops and other gambling premises in London and has nearly double the UK average. These are mainly found in the poorest areas of the borough.

What we‘re doing about gambling harms in Haringey

Haringey Council Public Health are working with local communities and colleagues across the public and charity sectors to reduce gambling harms. This includes face-to-face support for residents who may be struggling with their gambling or the gambling of someone close to them, and an education programme for local secondary schools and youth groups to help young people recognise the dangers of gambling.
