Language and Autism Support Team

Haringey’s Language and Autism Support Team (LAST) aims to improve the educational and life outcomes for Autistic children and young people and those with language and communication differences. 

We are an educational advisory support team for staff working in Haringey mainstream schools.  

We provide: 

  • advice and training to mainstream school staff  
  • support a whole-school approach to building capacity within schools to meet the needs of Autistic children and children with language and communication differences
  • supporting schools to be able to explain the diagnosis to families and children (with parental consent)  
  • supporting schools to be able to explain how language develops and how to understand and support their children’s language development

Support for schools and professionals

  • training and advice: we offer the Autism Education Trust accredited training to all schools in Haringey; a range of training for school staff based on supporting Autistic children and those with Language and Communication needs as part of a wider training package  
  • upon request from schools – individual advice and support for staff working with Autistic children
  • whole school advice and support around the development of language within the school system 
  • approaches to reduce the risk of exclusion for Autistic children and those with language needs – support for staff to understand the needs of Autistic children and those with language needs
  • transition support: training and advice around how to support children through school transitions (e.g., starting school, moving to secondary school)

Support for parents, carers, and families

  • youth club: Weekly term-time club for secondary-aged Autistic children attending Haringey mainstream schools 
  • ‘How to share a diagnosis’ event for parents/carers – runs twice per year

Access our services

  • ​​​​​schools and professionals: Contact us via email or telephone for referrals and advice
  • parents and families: Ask your school SEND Co-ordinator (SENDCO) to make a referral to us using the relevant referral form. Alternatively, you can email us directly
