Haringey's Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme

In Haringey, we support families in their feeding choices. The right to breastfeed in any public place is protected by law. This means that breastfeeding parents should never be asked to move, stop feeding or leave.

Breastfeeding is important for babies, mothers, society and the environment due to the various benefits it provides, such as reduced risks of infection and disease for child and baby.

Unfortunately, some women may feel nervous about breastfeeding when in public. They might not feel sure that venues and their staff will enforce their right to breastfeed. This may mean that they choose not to breastfeed or give up breastfeeding before they really want to.

Haringey's Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme will reassure them that a venue welcomes and supports breastfeeding.

Who can join the scheme

Haringey Welcomes Breastfeeding is for all local venues – small or large – that are open to the public. This includes:

  • businesses
  • shops
  • cafes
  • restaurants
  • community centres
  • museums
  • libraries
  • leisure centres

Benefits of joining

  1. Breastfeeding is good for parent and baby.
  2. It highlights customer service. It shows families that you care about their comfort, creating a welcoming space for all.
  3. It can attract new customers. Also, families’ visits tend not to be at the busiest times of day, so they may bring new custom at otherwise quiet times.
  4. It’s completely free. Signing up has no costs to your business and all resources are free.
  5. It shows you know and will uphold the law. It’s a woman’s right to breastfeed in a public place.

What do venues and businesses need to do?

The main commitments for a venue or business joining the scheme are to:

  • put up the We Welcome Breastfeeding sign and poster to show breastfeeding families you will make them feel welcome
  • make sure that your staff understand someone’s legal right to feed in public

There is no cost to the venue for signing up to the scheme. All materials will be provided.

Further advice and support are offered as required.
