Women's History Month Tottenham Walk with Avril Nanton

to

Join tour guide Avril Nanton for a walking tour of Tottenham.

The tour starts at Costa Coffee on Tottenham High Road and ends at Bruce Castle Museum. Avril is the author of Black London: History, Art and Culture in Over 120 Places and the Black History London Map.

On this walk, she explores the history of women in Haringey, with a particular focus on Black women who lived, worked in, or visited Tottenham.

Taking place during Women’s History Month, the walk follows the historic heart of Tottenham, from the High Road to Bruce Castle. Along the route, you will discover the stories of local Black women from the past 3 centuries who left their mark on the area. These include:

  • nurse Sister Freda in 1900
  • the Seven Sisters who planted trees
  • the woman behind Tottenham’s first Black comedy club

Come along to hear these fascinating stories, alongside those of many other African and Caribbean women connected to Tottenham.

Avril Nanton is a fully qualified tour guide who regularly leads walks and tours around Haringey, focusing on Black history and lived experience.

Please note: dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable footwear.
