Haringey secures additional £6 million to deliver more council homes

Residents across the borough are set to benefit from more than 220 new council homes following a successful bid by Haringey for £5.9 million of funding from the Brownfield Land Release Fund.

The funding will enable the borough to bring forward council-rent homes and transform derelict and underused brownfield land in a step towards delivering more than 3,000 council homes by 2031.

Haringey’s house-building programme is driving up standards by delivering high-quality, well-designed homes that are affordable to live in as well as creating developments that improve the public realm for new and existing residents.

Around 16% of the national allocation of the Brownfield Land Release Fund was awarded to Haringey Council, the most amount of funding any local authority has received as part of this scheme.

The funding is delivered by One Public Estate (OPE) and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) and Haringey’s allocation will be used on a number of the sites in their exciting house-building programme. Existing homes will not be demolished as part of these projects.

Cllr Ruth Gordon, Cabinet Member for House Building, Placemaking and Development, said:

I am delighted we’ve been able to secure such a significant amount of funding – the most that any local authority has received.

This is a key milestone for our ambitious council house building programme, which will see 3,000 new council-rent homes delivered for residents over the next ten years. Identifying suitable brownfield sites means we will create schemes that also provide environmental improvements for the whole community.

Like all London boroughs, Haringey is in desperate need of genuinely affordable housing, with around 12,500 households on the council’s waiting list. This funding will help to secure the high quality, sustainable new council homes we need.”

One Public Estate is a partnership between the Office of Government Property (OGP), the Local Government Association (LGA) and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC).  It provides practical and technical support and funding for public sector partners to deliver ambitious property-led programmes in collaboration.

A total of £35.9 million has been awarded to various councils across England to support the release of council-owned brownfield land.

This funding complements the £324.8 million that Haringey Council has secured from the GLA.
